New list: Gregg Allman ❤

1. There weren't many moments my parents displayed affection for each other when I was growing up, but listening to records hosted many of those times, specifically listening to Pink Floyd or Allman Brothers. There was a lot of Allman Brothers playing in my house.

2. A very sweet boy in high school called me one night and played "Melissa" on his guitar, singing "Sweet Alissa" instead. Earlier that week I complained to him that there were no songs with my name. He didn't say anything at the time, but that night when he was done he said, the Allman Brothers came close and hung up.*

3. A few years later, I worked at a pizza joint on Coventry and every Wednesday night we blasted Allman Brothers – singing along, getting high, and sharing our soulful introspections. Still my favourite job to date and those Wednesdays will remain in my heart. Did we just get older and too busy for nights like that or did how we engage with each other back then go out of style?

Just a few of the many, many times the Allman Brothers sound-tracked my absurd life. That super group in the sky just keeps getting better and better. My southern soul is crushed. RIP Gregg Allman. ❤

"If you don't hear what you want to hear, that's tough."

P.S. Blue Sky live from An Evening with the Allman Brothers Band First Set is one of my all time favourite songs. Lifts me up every time.

*and yes, I did sleep with that boy eventually (a few days later). I mean, swoon, right?

  10. Statesboro Blues – The Allman Brothers
  11. It’s Not My Cross To Bear – The Allman Brothers

New list: Friday Early Evening

If I was hip, I would listen to this (in its deliberate order) while preparing for a night out reveling in my hipness but as it were I was in bed at 20:30. I awoke just after midnight from a dream where I was singing "I'm Satisfied" with David Bowie at a karaoke joint somewhere in New Mexico. It. Was. Breathtaking.

New list: The Rolling Stones

I dreamed the other night that a beautiful siren was calling to me from a pool of glittery purple water (that ended up tasting like lemonade) with a symphonic yet still sleazy version of Can You Hear Me Knocking. My sexy-time dreams are usually/often soundtracked by Abba (for reasons I don’t know), so this was different. Then today, the mysteriously attractive barista mentioned his favourite Stones record was Sticky Fingers. A lovely coincidence that deserved a playlist.

11 tracks from the masters of the sleazy rock n’ roll riff because there’s almost nothing hotter than Mick Jagger in his element of sexin’ up a rock stage.

  1. Love Is Strong
  2. Start Me Up
  3. I Got The Blues
  4. Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
  5. Beas Of Burden
  6. You Can’t Always Get What You Want

  8. Sweet Virginia
  9. She’s So Cold
  10. Emotional Rescue

9/1/17 #23
New list: R.E.M.

R.E.M. has been one of my all-time favourite bands since the day my father’s best friend, Tom “the punk rocker*,” played his newest tape – Murmur – and I jumped around to Radio Free Europe like the spaz you’re supposed to be when listening to R.E.M. My father bought the vinyl and my long-time love affair with those weirdos from Athens was born.

In honor of Document's 30th bday (!), my go-to R.E.M. tracks.

  1. So. Central Rain
  2. Bad Day
  3. Near Wild Heaven
  4. Talk About The Passion
  5. Radio Free Europe
  6. Crush With Eyeliner
  7. Superman
  8. Orange Crush
  9. It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
  10. Try Not To Breathe
  11. You Are The Everything *2nd appearance

*Tom “the punk rocker” (called that because my father was Tom “the kid”) looked and dressed like a cross between Brian Setzer and Billy Idol, and he is the root of many of my rock ‘n’ roll obsessions. He rode a motorcycle, and was essentially my “manny” when I was in pre-K – 2nd grades. We would go to the arcade, the park, the local jukebox bar, tons of places around Hattiesburg & Dallas. He took me to see Joan Jett & the Blackhearts when I was 4, and he was my first crush. I’ll have to make a playlist of tracks introduced to me by TTPR.

9/4/17 #24

10/2/17 #25
New list: TOM PETTY

One of the best concerts and most memorable nights of my adolescent life was the Dogs with Wings tour 8/27/95 at Blossom Music Center the night before my senior year of high school started. EVERYBODY WAS THERE. Melissa drove the girls, Nathan drove the boys. Rebecca and I ended up running 4 miles from the a random car check point to the entrance of the park without our tickets at a time when cell phones weren’t really a thing, my boyfriend and I officially broke up at the show, I crushed hard on a new boy immediately, a shirtless man called Jesus grabbed my hand and danced me around the venue, I heard one of my all time favorite songs performed live (The Waiting) and the night ended at Denny’s as it usually did those days. We took no photos or videos and we watched the show intently. It was the best possible kick-off to a pretty spectacular senior year.

I grew up with Tom Petty – he was a staple in my house. He is the quintessential American rock musician, and I’m grateful for all the music he left us with (these 12 especially, I couldn't keep it at 11).

Peace in rest, Tom.

*Stop Draggin' My Heart Around should be on this list, but I can't put Stevie on a memorial playlist yet. I just can't.

10/23/17 #26
New list: Funeral for a Friend.

I wrote a whole thing about grief, but it was too much – too vulnerable and too arrogant – so I’ll keep it simple. I lost a friend this week, many of us did. He was kind and thoughtful and I will live with the regret that I never admitted my fault in the terrible way we parted. He will never hear me say I’m sorry and I will never experience his warm smile again. All I can do now is make my best effort to never make that mistake again.

I made a playlist of sentimental pop songs about loss and love because that’s what I do. These songs aren’t necessarily specific to this situation, but help me reflect and focus.

“Sentimental music has this great way of taking you back somewhere at the same time that it takes you forward, so you feel nostalgic and hopeful all at the same time.”– Nick Hornby (author, High Fidelity)

I will also cry because I do that a lot too.

  1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts.1-5) – Pink Floyd
  2. Long May You Run – Neil Young

  10. Just Breathe – Pearl Jam
  11. Always On My Mind – Willie Nelson

New list: songs I wouldn’t listen to alone in a cemetery but also would

I actually made this playlist a couple of years ago after a foreboding and vivid yet colourless dream I had about running away from friends through city streets in a thick and dark fog. So thick and sharp the fog cut my face and hands. People were everywhere all around me talking to me. LITERALLY MY WORST NIGHTMARE. A few of these songs were playing in my dream.*

And yea, Uptown Girl is included. It made sense at the time for me thematically, and honestly it still does. It’s like mega-pop prom queen thriller. I also may have been a little drunk.

Happy Halloween.

  2. Electric Funeral – Black Sabbath*
  3. Dead Babies – Alice Cooper
  4. No Quarter – Led Zeppelin*

New list: #3catsfromdoom

You let me know you don’t usually get too deep with strangers, and I had to let you know it was rare for me too, but the words came easily and we both have arcane smiles. You nearly lost me with your jazz and afro beat fervor, but I couldn’t stop wondering how that scar on your lip might feel on my lip, and I just knew I’d dig your scent. If I remembered your full name or where you get your morning coffee, I might tell you I love you and I think you could make me love jazz, but your girlfriend is lovely and I’m not as bold as I once was, so this is the best I can do to sit in what I feel is your rhythm.

New list: <3 2018="" font="">

I can’t handle wearing pants let alone someone’s future, BUT I LOVE LOVE. Every kind and every part.* At times you feel extreme elation, others absolute misery. Love is wild, weird, sexy, painful, fulfilling, challenging, confusing, encouraging, scary af… it assumes (consumes?) the vast spectrum of every feeling. It’s a noun and a verb. I’ve cried a million tears of joy and more of despair. I’ve fallen in love at first sight more than once and I’ve had my heart annihilated like, every day. No matter what, it’s some kind of magnificent torture. AND I CAN’T GET ENOUGH. Give me all the fully body hugs and French hellos. Give me all the first, 27th, 42nd, and last kisses. I’ll take the sighs, quibbles, butterflies, sorrows, beginnings, endings, laughter and tears. All of it makes us better.

Yes, the world is full of violence and tragedy and corruption and terrible things that go bump in the night… but, it’s also brimming with all kinds of love. We get to love ourselves and each other. I’m going to celebrate that, because really, how fucking great is that? I choose love.**

“And the [wo]men who hold high placesMust be the ones who startTo mold a new realityCloser to the heart”

New list: ...Good Vibrations?

A friend of mine came in to see my place the other night. I had to run in quickly as I remembered my vibrator was on the coffee table (because I live alone and sometimes that’s just where it’s left) and in an odd moment of panic, I threw it into my darkened bed room. The blind panic toss landed perfectly in my backpack. Something I didn’t notice until I opened my backpack the next morning.

In my office. 😳

New list: the other tracks

Back in the day you had to buy a full length vinyl/tape/CD for the 1 or 2 songs you heard on the radio or MTV. Yes, there were “singles” available, but unless the b-side or additional tracks were some crazy remix, live or a rarity (that’s a whole playlist itself) you bought the full album (you could also tape songs off the radio, but the DJs were annoying af). And many times on that full album, you often found better tracks than the released single, or at least just as enjoyable, but they never really got their just due. These are some of those – not lost, but at times under appreciated – tracks. The other tracks.

Bonus track: Cut Up. When you take a chance on a free Columbia House tape because you had to pick one more and liked the weird band name. Then it ended up as one of your fav early 90’s albums.

2*14 = 28

143 is “I love you” in pager speak (for those who remember).

This was not intentional, this was serendipity. I was so inspired to write about love this morning while listening to this playlist, but in the craze of the day, I lost it. Here’s hoping it comes back sometime soon.

New list: I see you Jack White & raise you #11ouder

Jack White made a 10-track Led Zeppelin playlist (Led Zeppelin X Jack White, CLICK HERE) so I made an 11-track Led Zeppelin playlist (I guess I should call it “Led Zeppelin XI AZ”). He had a few I would choose (like my obvious all time LZ fav The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair) but I didn’t allow for repeats.

He says “Led Zeppelin are an immovable force in music… I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like them.”

I say the élan vital requires a wild soundtrack and LZ is a significant contributor. For me at least. And probably Jack White (JW, call me).

So, GET YOUR PANTS OFF AND GET THE LED OUT.

  1. Ten Years Gone
  2. You Shook Me
  3. Ozone Baby
  4. Bron-Y-Aur-Stomp

  11. The Rain Song
